Blog Post : Academic Libraries

Review the description of the LibQual survey. LibQual survey results can provide statistical evidence to:

-support proposed initiatives or purchases

-measure the success of recently implemented strategies

-identify areas of strength (to continue) and weakness (to address) for planning purposes.

Visit the Guelph Library  website and the Humber College report (pages 6-17) and read their responses to the results of their surveys.

How can Guelph use the evidence from research to address the issue of library as place?  What issues should be priorities for management to address at Humber College?

Guelph can use the evidence from research to address the issue of library as place is that they use LibQual to know who of User’s – Undergraduates, Graduates and  Faculty members, When they are using the library, why they are using the library – for individual study, learning space, Research and resources, and use for technology ( computers, printers, photocopiers machine-  to  know if the Guelph library space is being used appropriately and if their services are accessible.  From the readings, I feel Humber College needs to take a Libqual quiz to have their clients shares their opinion on Affect of service, information control and library as a space so the librarians can have proof of how the library is providing the needs for their clients and if they need to improve or adapt.  The most important answer they need to cover is what are the dissatisfactions that a User has when going to the library ? Is it that there nowhere to sit because all the chairs and study carrels are full, that they only have limited collections in print, ebook, scholarly journals and on reserve? Are there enough staff ? Are the staff approachable to help with a client questions and needs? How is the noise level ? All theses questions and more are crucial to a library because they only have very little budget to satisfy everyone needs. They need to make sure that the printers are fulled, that there someone at reference desk or circulation, need to do a seat count a couple times a day to see what are the low times, peak times during the day, week or month that clients are coming in. Librarians are Humber want to have easy to use index and databases to ensure clients can find on their own and  off campus, navigate through the library webpage and guides to show  clients how to keep information cited, and have levels of noise to certain level of the library.
